Manosegawa River Art Project 1999
Manosegawa River with an overall length of about 26km is flowing across the south of Kyushu Island into the East China Sea. Four local communities locating along the Manosegawa River and its branches collaborated in the river art project Ichi Ikeda directed. For community people, this was the first experience to cooperate beyond boundaries lying between the districts. Ichi Ikeda kept stating to them; "A artwork is originally something like a magnifying lens. Through this special lens, you can see what you have never been aware: inherent stories of the land, new appearance of the scene, intercommunication between human and nature etc.ﾓ Starting from these processes, artist and people in the basin continued to work together to create desirable combination between whatﾕs called Commonality and Inherency in whole two months.
The common keyword flowing through all art works were presented as follows: "Water Ekiden Project in league of people in the basin" and "Network for producing 'water' essential for the future earth." River is likened to the railway, and 4 water stations were constructed in consideration of different water situation of each districts; water from the heaven(rain), water from the earth(spring water), water with daily life(purified water), water for agriculture(irrigation water). Each Water Stations have the role of the starting station of the Water Ekiden and are asking to the viewers, "What kind of water can you carry to the people living on the future earth?" The Committee members of the Manosegawa River Art Project talked about their expectation; "These artworks, we hope, encourage people to have more positive interest in water problems, activities by volunteers and interchange between communities."
'Art on Water' creating
the future story of the site
The Manosegawa River Art Project is originating
from the Cycle Art Gallery in Kaseda, Kagoshima, where contemporary art
works were installed outside during the exhibition. This year 1999 is the
third year of this outdoor exhibition. Hoping to spread the fruit of 2 years
among other communities located along the Manosegawa River, the organizing
members in Kaseda asked other community people to work together for the
next art project. And eventually they came to join in this extended art
project called the Manosegawa River Art Project. For them, this is the first
experience to cooperate beyond boundaries of the districts. Starting from
these processes, collaborative art works between artist and people in the
basin has been completed at selected sites in each districts in whole two
