NETWORK PROJECTS

Short History of Network Projects by

Asia Edge Project
through the Seoul-Tokyo-New York Art Project

The Seoul-Tokyo-New York Art Project, which created a new art movement called ASIA EDGE, began in 1988 as an international cultural exchange through contemporary arts, aiming to achieve the following objectives:
---To explore the art movement through a global network run by artists themselves,
---To pursue the possibilities of collaborative project in an increasingly multi-cultural world.

As the first stage of the Seoul-Tokyo-New York Art Project, we have concentrated on creating collaborative activities between the neighboring countries of Japan and Korea. Through a series of collaborative associations with Korean artists, we became aware of what is important in planning and realizing international collaborative projects between artists of different cultural backgrounds.

We learned in particular that people should not regard different cultural backgrounds as mere object for cultural comparison, but rather these differences be activated as the motive for creating the inherent role in collaborative activities.

As we launched the second phase of ASIA EDGE, we have made efforts to expand our collaborative project from two countries to multi-cultural relationships in the Asia Pacific region where many cultures actually coexist. And now we make sure ASIA EDGE's theme "Inherent to Asia/ Global from Asia" will help Asian artists discover their common ground and that will result in establishing an active network among them.
